Outsourcing and Offshoring in the Insurance Industry: Trends, Trials, and Transition Management
Presenter(s): Morgan Davis, Deloitte Consulting LLP; Sridhar Rajan, Deloitte Consulting LLP
Deloitte’s research shows that Outsourcing has “gone mainstream” in the insurance industry, and has become just another standard business practice that should be evaluated as business needs mandate. The focus has shifted from “should I outsource?” to “how do I optimize my service delivery portfolio?”. As companies focus on maximizing the value from their outsourcing arrangements, we have found that the transition phase of the outsourcing lifecycle continues to be a significant contributor to value erosion and one that requires greater focus from customers, service providers and advisors. Transition can be defined as “the smooth transfer of services from a legacy organization to a vendor organization in accordance with contractual requirements.” An effective transition can unlock the value of an outsourcing engagement, thereby laying the groundwork for a relationship that can last for many years to come. However, many transitions fail in the first year and executives face problems during a transition. This session will discuss the common issues of transition and strategies that companies can implement to avoid losing value from their outsourcing strategies through this critical part of the lifecycle.

The future of sustained competitive advantage and growth hinges on our ability to increase our customer centricity and requires us to effectively manage the collision of these disruptive innovations. The absence of holistic digital strategies to address all digital initiatives and data will slow the enterprise movement towards customer centricity and competitive advantage. Whereas past efforts to create this holistic view have been hampered by organizational silos, current and future efforts will add environmental complexity to their list of obstacles. Oversight, governance, alignment and direction have never been more important. Growth in this decade will depend on successfully integrating mobile, social, Web and traditional sales channels with the big data analytics needed to reinvent customer relationships. Carriers need a digital vision that integrates all the new customer touch points—including smartphones and tablet devices-- while staying in compliance with regulatory and privacy demands.
